Tipping
By Patricia Illingworth (The New Press, forthcoming 2027)
Dr. Illingworth is currently researching the multifaceted topic of tipping. Her forthcoming book explores how tipping practices have evolved, including its legacy with slavery. Illingworth's research investigates how tipping resembles "hazard pay" and charity, and how it can violate the human right to dignity.
The book will also show that tipping perpetuates structural injustices and inequalities within service industries. Illingworth aims to spark a reevaluation of this widespread practice and consider alternative solutions that protect human rights and ensure fair wages and working conditions for all tipped workers.
